Three names come up again and again. Each one does a single job.

Coordination. Your server tells devices who is on the network and who may talk to whom.

Your traffic. Encrypted end to end with WireGuard and sent directly between your devices whenever possible.

WireGuard The encryption
The technology underneath. WireGuard builds fast, encrypted tunnels between two devices, so nobody in between can read what they send each other.
Tailscale The apps
Tailscale makes WireGuard effortless. Install the app, sign in, and your devices find each other wherever they are, with no port forwarding and no firewall rules. Normally the apps report to a coordination server run by Tailscale Inc.
headscale The coordination server
An open-source version of that coordination server. It does the same job, introducing your devices to each other and handing out keys, but it belongs to you and has no limit on users.
HostedScale The hosting
Running headscale yourself means renting a server, installing it, securing it and keeping it running. That part is handled for you. You get an address and a console.

From sign-up to a working network in three steps

You never log in to a server. It is provisioned for you and the address appears in your console.

    An email and a password, nothing else. Pick a name for your network and your 14-day free trial starts.

    Your server is provisioned

    A dedicated server is created, headscale is installed and configured, and the connection is tested. Its address appears in your console when it is ready.

  3. Step 3

    Connect your devices

    Install the official Tailscale app, point it at your server address and sign in. Then manage users, machines and access rules from the console.

Every change goes through a queue

The console never writes straight to your live server. Each change becomes a request, is applied to your server and is confirmed back in your console. You always know what is live and what is still on its way.

Questions

Is there a free trial?

Yes, 14 days. You do not need Bitcoin to start. When the trial ends you pay for your first year, or the server is shut down.

What is headscale?

headscale is an open-source version of the Tailscale control server, the part that tells your devices how to find each other. With your own headscale server you get a private network that works like Tailscale, under your control and without a limit on users.

How do I pay?

In Bitcoin, on our own BTCPay Server checkout. The price is fixed in EUR and converted at the moment you pay. There are no cards and no third-party payment processors.

Why is it billed once a year?

One payment a year means no card on file and no monthly charge to keep track of. The price is €85 a month, charged as one yearly payment of €1,020. There is no monthly plan.

What do you know about me?

Your email address, and the users, machines and policies you create, because we need them to run your server. We do not ask for a name, a phone number or a billing address, and the payment page never receives your email. Like any server, yours sees the IP addresses of the devices that connect to it.

Can you see my traffic?

No. headscale only coordinates: it hands out keys and tells your devices where to find each other. The traffic itself is encrypted end to end with WireGuard between your devices.

How fast are changes applied?

Usually within a day, and often sooner. Changes are queued and applied to your server in order, so they are not instant. A brand new server can take a little longer, because it is tested before you get it.

Does my network stop while a request is pending?

No. Pending only means a change is not live yet. Everything that was already working keeps working.

Which apps do my devices use?

The official Tailscale apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. You point them at your server address instead of Tailscale's. Your console shows how for each platform.

What happens when I cancel?

You cancel from your console. A year you have paid for runs to its end and is not renewed.
